The Disease That Cannot Be Cured, Only Prevented

Plant virus hydroponic greenhouse defence starts long before the first symptom, because nothing cures a virus in a standing crop. Fungal diseases can be sprayed, root rots can be flushed — but a virus in a crop is there for the season. Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) has shown exactly how expensive that fact is: it moves on seed, hands, tools and clothing; it survives on surfaces for months; and it defeats the resistance genes growers relied on for decades. Entire production regions have faced field destruction and export closures.

How Viruses Actually Enter a Farm

PathwayRisk levelControl
Seed and planting materialHighestSeed health certificates, resistant varieties where available, trusted nursery chain
People (hands, clothing, shoes)HighHygiene protocol, house-dedicated clothing, entry discipline
Tools and equipmentHighColour-coded per house, disinfection between rows
Grafting and crop workHighDisinfected blades per plant batch, trained crews, no “helping” between houses
Bumblebees (virus vectors of some pathogens)ModerateCertified colonies, close-out if symptoms appear
Visitors and contractorsModerateVisitor log, no recent-other-greenhouse rule, protective clothing
Water and recirculationLower for viruses, high for othersWater treatment as standard practice

The table has a pattern: nearly every high-risk row is about movement. Viruses are passenger diseases — they travel on whatever we move.

The Scouting and Roguing Routine

You will not stop every introduction. The second line of defence is finding the first plant fast:

  1. Weekly virus-specific scouting — train scouts on symptom photo sheets for your crops; mosaic, leaf distortion, fruit marbling
  2. Suspicious plants are not touched bare-handed — bag in place, seal, remove from the house
  3. Send samples for lab testing where the diagnosis matters commercially; test strips exist for several key viruses and belong in the farm office
  4. Rogue a radius: remove neighbouring plants if confirmed — the cost of two extra plants is nothing against a season
  5. Record every event: date, house, row, lot code, action — this record is what authorities and buyers ask for

Speed is the whole game. A virus found in week 2 is a story; found in week 8 it is a catastrophe with a client list.

Hygiene That Actually Works

Write the protocol on one page at the door, in the languages your crew actually reads. The best protocol is the one a new worker follows on their first day unsupervised.

FAQ

Can ToBRFV be cured once in the crop?

No. Infected plants are removed, movement is frozen, and the focus shifts to containment and clean-down before the next cycle. There is no treatment a grower can apply.

How long does the virus survive on surfaces?

Studies show survival for weeks to months on dry surfaces, and longer in plant debris. This is why between-cycle sanitation is a months-scale commitment, not a weekend hose-down.

Do seed certificates guarantee virus-free seed?

They state what was tested and at what sample rate, under stated methods. Buy on the method and the sampling rate, not on the existence of a document.

Is hydroponics more or less at risk from viruses?

Waterwise, less — closed treated water removes one pathway. But dense plantings, shared tools and intensive crop work raise mechanical transmission risk. The net is: different risk profile, not lower total risk.

What should we do if a neighbouring farm has an outbreak?

Tighten to maximum hygiene immediately: no shared staff or equipment, visitor freeze, doubled scouting, and communicate — viruses respect property lines less than contracts do.

Will buyers ask about our virus status?

Increasingly, yes, especially in tomato supply chains. A documented seed health, scouting and roguing record is becoming a commercial access requirement, not just agronomy.

Prevention Is a Payroll Line, Not a Purchase

Virus defence costs training hours, footbaths and discipline — the cheapest insurance in this list of guides. We help farms structure these protocols as part of system design. Start with the quote form.
