NFT channels are assembly-level hardware — a competent greenhouse crew can install them with drawings and a checkable process. What separates a smooth-running system from a year of tail-end problems is not muscle, it’s three numbers: slope, flow and channel length. This guide is the installation sequence we hand to client crews, including the commissioning checks that catch errors while they’re still cheap to fix.

Before You Start: The Three Numbers

100x50mm NFT channel for installation
ParameterTargetConsequence of getting it wrong
Channel slope1–2% (1–2 cm drop per meter)Level: pooling + drowned roots · Too steep: dry rivulets
Flow per channel1–2 L/min at the far endLower: tail plants starve visibly
Channel run length≤ 10–12 m per runLonger: size gradient down the row, no nutrient fix

Measure, don’t eyeball. The most common installation defect we get called out to fix is slope set by eye — “looks about right” hides a dead-level section or a reverse-slope belly. A laser level or even a string line with a measured drop at the far end turns this from a hope into a fact. One hour of leveling saves a season of chasing tail-end problems.

1. Mark the layout

Chalk the channel rows, walkways and irrigation room on the actual floor. Check that walkways fit your picking trolley and a wheelbarrow of harvest crates — the drawing is optimistic, the floor is the truth.

2. Set the stands

Install stands row by row, high end at the supply manifold. Set the height for working comfort (~80–95 cm) — your harvest crews will live with this decision every picking day.

3. Level and slope-check the structure

With stands placed, string-line from the high end to the low end of each row and measure the drop. Adjust stand feet until every row shows the target fall. Do this before channels are loaded — adjusting loaded stands is how backs get strained and channels get cracked.

4. Lay channels and join runs

Place channels end to end with the manufacturer’s joiners, end caps at the far end with the drain fitting oriented to the return line. Keep holes/spacing aligned to your planting plan. Protect lid seams from light leaks as you go — every seam is future algae if light enters.

5. Run supply piping

Manifold from the pump to each row’s high end. Add a valve per row — this is what makes flushing and maintenance a row-local job instead of a system shutdown. (Understand the full water loop in our NFT system guide.)

6. Run return lines

Return piping from each row’s end cap back to the reservoir, sized so total return capacity exceeds total supply — or rows back up at peak flow. Maintain continuous fall; a return low-point traps solution and biofilm.

7. Commission: the checks that matter

  1. Flow test per row, at the far end — measure actual L/min at the last channel with a jug and stopwatch
  2. Sweep the film — walk each channel and confirm a continuous, even film, no pooling spots, no dry patches
  3. Leak check under pressure — 30 minutes of full operation, inspect every joiner and end cap
  4. Balance the manifold — adjust row valves until far-end flows are equal across rows near and far from the pump
  5. Log the baseline — record flows, pump pressure and EC/pH readings; this is your reference for spotting drift

FAQ

Can channels be installed on an existing sloped greenhouse floor?
A: Yes — the stands absorb the floor’s fall so the channel slope is set independently. That’s exactly why stand-leveling happens before channels go on.

What drop should I actually measure per channel?
A: On a 6 m channel at 1.5%, expect ~9 cm of fall end to end. Write the target number on the row plan and check it with a string line.

Do I need a professional installer?
A: No — but you need this sequence, our drawings and a careful crew. Most client teams self-install successfully with remote commissioning support from our engineers.

Need the Channels to Match?

Buying channels separately or as a full system — send your layout through the quote form and we’ll confirm channel counts, joiner kits and valve placement for your exact rows.
